The Frontier Kid

The Autobiography of Glenn J. Smith

During the period after moving on the farm, I got acquainted with a neighbor boy by the name of Rainey Masters. In the summer, we would play catch with a baseball and hit flies for the other one to catch. We also had other enjoyments… We dug a cave in a high bank on his dad's farm to store our valuables in. These consisted of Raison Jack, Elderberry Wine, Grape Wine, and Cider. The Raison Jack we stole a little bit at a time from his dad (Ed) who hid it from his wife (Torry) in the haymow in the barn. The elderberry wine, we made twenty some quarts and hid it under the potatoe bin in our basement. When it started fermenting, it popped the corks and eventually my mother found it and broke every bottle. We made other batches and stored it in the cave. Maybe I should bring this to attention, when we had little or nothing else to do Rainey's neighbor Mr. Hinkle baught texas stears every spring and let them pasture in the swampy land that he owned with a creek running thr'u it, also, had a lot of brush on it, we would sneak up on one that was laying down and jump on his back and grab hold of his horns

and ride him until he brushed us off, Mr Hinkle caught us in the act one day and really give us a word shellacking, he said we were running the fat off his stears that he was trying to fatten. So be it.-----.
