The Frontier Kid

The Autobiography of Glenn J. Smith

There comes a time when a young buck gets very interested in the opposite sex. Plainly speaking, girls. It seems that I was always in contact with a lot of 'em during my skating nights. My friend, Howard Young and I would see how many dates we could get in one night. There were times we'd take two girls home from the skate, and then we'd pick two more up at their home and go out on the town. This happened quite a few times until Howard got interested in one particular girl. Her name was Delores. She was a very pretty girl whom he eventually married. (I can't think of her maiden name. However, I certainly should, because I took her out a couple times myself! Anyway, I'll think of it later…)

Be that as it may, the skate is where I met the beautiful young thing, Ardis direct from her baccalaureate night at Frontier High School. I forget which night it was on, but anyway, I told Howdy that she was the girl I was going to marry some day. He said, "Bologna," but I immediately went up and asked her to skate. She was rather shy, and hesitated a bit. She probably didn't want to skate with me because she had heard not so good things about me as I had a somewhat roust-a-bout reputation in the County area. But, I presume that my skating ability kind of turned her thinking at the time, because she agreed to skate. Before the skate was over, I had a date with her for the next Saturday night. She was 15 at the time, so it was a couple years before we were steady. Then, more or less, the rest has been history! However, we did go together for four years before we were married.
