I can remember when I was 3 and 4 years old. We lived in Battle Creek on a street west of the old Nichols and Shepard factory, the factory made Farm Equipment in the late 30s and early 40s. Then it became known as the Oliver Corp, they also made farm machinery but specialized in farm tractors. Then I believe in the late 60s, M.S.U. bought them out, tore down the buildings, and cleaned the land.
Going back to where we lived, my ma and pa would take Ellen (my sister) and I down a few blocks to the interurbane stop in the summer and buy us an ice cream cone. I'll try and explain the interurbane. It was usually a single car that was powered by a third electric rail that originated I believe in Kalamazoo, and served Battle Creek, Marshall, Homer, Albion, and several other small towns and just where it finished its run I'm not sure. (This would make a good research project for somebody…)
At the time, we lived in Battle Creek. My dad was in charge of building the roads in Fort Custer. This lasted I believe 2 years. Then we moved back to Frontier, MI, where we came from. My first recollection where we were to live was quite funny, yet appalling. When we opened the door off the porch to go into the kitchen, (this is why I remember), there was ice on the floor. With a running start, we slid all the way across and run into the wall on the other side.
